Planning for Cabo in 2026?

While Cabo remains the ultimate destination for sun and luxury, 2026 is seeing a major shift toward “Elevated Spring Breaks”—moving away from the typical college chaos and toward upscale beach clubs and private boat charters. Whether you’re coming for the world-famous whale watching season (peaking in March!) or looking to hit the newest hotspots in the Marina, this updated 2026 itinerary covers everything from the legendary nightlife to the quiet, hidden coves that the crowds haven’t found yet.

New for 2026: The Next Level of Cabo Luxury

Cabo’s luxury landscape has shifted significantly for 2026. The most buzz-worthy addition is the newly opened Park Hyatt Los Cabos at Cabo del Sol, which officially began welcoming guests late last year. It’s a masterclass in “contemporary Baja” design, featuring world-class golf access and a highly anticipated Levantine restaurant, Silán, opening this spring. If you are planning a trip for later this year, keep an eye on the St. Regis Los Cabos at Quivira, which is slated for a grand opening in Summer 2026. Even if you aren’t staying at these properties, they are the new “it” spots for high-end dining and beach club vibes that define the 2026 travel scene.

Whale Watching Tips for 2026 (Peak Season: January-March)

If you are visiting in early 2026, you are in the prime window for one of Cabo’s most spectacular sights. While the season officially runs from December through mid-April, January and February offer the highest likelihood of close encounters as mother-calf pairs become more active. For 2026, there is a strong trend toward eco-conscious “Small Batch” tours. I recommend booking an 8:00am excursion to beat the midday winds and the larger catamaran crowds. Not only are the seas calmer for photography, but the whales tend to be more playful in the cooler morning light.

Important Notes

This itinerary keeps in mind six full days to explore Cabo San Lucas, including a day trip. There are no time constraints in this itinerary, allowing you to explore the city and surrounding towns at your own pace and keeping in mind potential traffic and the lengths of different tours you might choose. I also offer restaurant recommendations and several alternatives to many attractions.

Which Airport Should You Arrive At?

It is important to note that there are two airports in the Los Cabos region of Baja California Sur, Mexico: San José del Cabo International Airport (SJD) and Cabo San Lucas International Airport (CSL). To fly into Cabo San Lucas, you should fly into SJD airport. SJD is the main commercial airport for the entire region, while CSL is a much smaller airport primarily for private and general aviation.

Car Rental

A rental car is necessary if you want to explore the beaches northeast (such as Santa Maria beach) if you stay in the city center and vice versa (if you stay along the northeastern coast and want to visit the city center). If you have read my post about essential travel apps, then you know I love to use Turo to rent cars, but Turo is unavailable in Mexico. Therefore, I recommend renting a car through Cactus Car Rental, located at SJD airport. Customers highly rate their trustworthy service and exceptional customer support. You can read more about Cactus on their website.

Day 1: The Beach, Snorkeling, Fishing

After your journey, relax and immerse yourself in the beauty of Los Cabos. Day one is dedicated to beach hopping among the region’s few swimmable shores, which sit on the calm Gulf of California (Sea of Cortez) side. Start your afternoon with a water taxi from the Marina to the famed Lover’s Beach (Playa del Amor), an absolute must-see for couples. Flanked by dramatic rock formations, this secluded cove offers safe swimming and snorkeling, and is separated by a natural arch from the non-swimmable, rugged Pacific-facing Divorce Beach

Alternatively, for a more social scene, the popular El Médano Beach is lined with lively restaurants and beach clubs where you can enjoy your first round of margaritas with your toes in the sand. For a truly tranquil and romantic dip, drive along the Tourist Corridor to Santa Maria Bay or Chileno Bay Beach, both renowned for their crystal-clear, calm waters and excellent snorkeling right off the sand, perfect for unwinding after your travels.

2026 Snorkeling Update: Chileno Bay & Santa Maria

For those looking to get underwater in 2026, Chileno Bay remains the gold standard. As of this year, Chileno has successfully renewed its Blue Flag certification, meaning it meets the highest global standards for water quality and beach facilities. It now features a “H2O Activity Cave” at the resort side, but for independent travelers, the public access has been upgraded with a newish wooden boardwalk and expanded outdoor showers. If you find Chileno a bit too social, 2026 is the year to visit neighboring Santa Maria Bay. This horseshoe-shaped marine sanctuary is notably quieter and, thanks to new 2026 “A+ Cleanliness” initiatives, offers some of the best visibility in the corridor—often stretching up to 100 feet on calm mornings.

Pro-Tip: Avoiding the 2026 “Airport Knot”

If you are driving to these snorkeling spots from San Jose del Cabo or the airport, be aware of the Fonatur Underpass construction. This massive infrastructure project is designed to fix the notorious traffic circle, but until its scheduled completion in May 2026, traffic can be a bit of a “mess” during peak afternoon hours. I recommend heading to the bays early (before 9:00am) to beat both the tour boats and the heavy construction traffic. Not only will you get the best parking spot, but you’ll have the reefs to yourself before the mid-morning catamaran crowd arrives.

Swimming Safety Note

While the Pacific side is strictly non-swimmable due to fierce currents, the Sea of Cortez side offers several beautiful, protected bays. Always pay close attention to the beach flag warning system (Green = Safe, Red = Prohibited) and only enter the water at designated, marked swimmable beaches. The beaches I listed above are all on the calm side, offering safe waters for you to relax and enjoy. Always observe the flags, trust your instincts, and only swim in designated, protected areas.

Dinner

For dinner, treat yourself to Hacienda Cocina y Cantina, an exceptional Mexican restaurant located within the exclusive Hacienda Beach Club & Residences. This sophisticated and romantic spot features tables set directly on the sand, providing an unobstructed, front-row view of Land’s End and El Arco at sunset. The cuisine is authentic and high-quality, specializing in fresh seafood, traditional moles, and regional Mexican dishes perfect for sharing. It’s the ideal choice for a celebratory first night, blending a luxury setting with delicious food and a truly spectacular view.

For a more casual and iconic Cabo experience, head to The Office on the Beach. This famous and beloved institution is known for its high energy and fun, social atmosphere, complete with live music. The entire restaurant is set up right on the sand of Medano Beach, with colorful chairs and lanterns creating a quintessential setting. The menu features traditional Mexican cuisine and fresh seafood, including everything from lobster and grilled fish to tacos, all highlighted by their elaborate tableside presentations.

Day 2: Ocean Activities

Today, explore the majestic Sea of Cortez! The Arch of Cabo San Lucas (El Arco) is a must-see landmark, and an ideal way to visit is by booking a guided tour. To see wildlife, visit the resident sea lion colony at Land’s End and/or book a whale watching tour to see migrating humpbacks, seen between January and March.

Numerous reputable companies like Envatours Cabo, Cabo Adventures, and Cabo Blue Boat offer excursions, including popular sunset cruises, as well as unique options like tequila tasting and camel rides. To avoid exhaustion, I recommend booking a maximum of two tours for the day. Tours can be conveniently booked online through major platforms like Viator and GetYourGuide.

Dinner

Since your Day 2 activities will likely wrap up at the Cabo San Lucas Marina after your excursions, you have several highly-rated options right there, depending on the dining experience you want—from casual waterfront fun to romantic, family-style Italian and more.

If you’re looking for a lively, casual, open-air experience right on the waterfront, Captain Tony’s is highly rated. Known for its festive vibe, great service, and marina views, it serves a diverse menu of fresh seafood, authentic Mexican dishes like Mexican Ceviche and Queso Fundido Con Chorizo, and American favorites like wood-fired pizza. They even offer a famous “You Hook It, We Cook It” service for sportfishing guests.

Alternatively, for a more cozy atmosphere specializing in comfort food, Salvatore G’s is just one block off the marina. This charming spot is nestled in a beautiful, light-strung courtyard and is famous for its enormous, family-style portions of Italian-American cuisine, with the lasagna and Porketta Italiana being highly recommended dishes.

Another option a little farther from the marina is San Lucero Restaurant & Wine Bar, which offers a sophisticated, yet cozy and welcoming atmosphere. The diverse menu features a delightful fusion of French, Italian, and authentic Mexican cuisine, with an extensive selection of fine wines and cocktails, as well as signature dishes like the fresh Pesca del Día (Fish of the Day) and the delicious traditional Mexican specialty, Chile en Nogada. The restaurant is also noted for its friendly, attentive service and a lovely rooftop seating area, making it a great choice for both casual dining and special occasions.

Day 3: Day Trip to Todos Santos–Culture, Cuisine, and Coastline

Todos Santos is a vibrant town an hour’s drive from Cabo, renowned as a Pueblo Mágico (Magic Town) for its preserved culture and rich history. Upon arrival, dedicate time to exploring the charming historic center. This area is a haven for art lovers, famous for its numerous boutiques and art galleries—like Galería Logan or Galería de Todos Santos—showcasing local painters and sculptors. Wander the colorful, cobblestone streets to see the old colonial architecture and visit the historic Nuestra Señora del Pilar Church and the famous (though possibly legendary) Hotel California.

If you need to stop at a place to eat on your drive north from Cabo, I highly recommend lunch in the nearby farming town of El Pescadero. Try the famous Hierbabuena or Agricole Cocina de Campo for an amazing farm-to-table experience featuring organic, local produce. Another highly-rated restaurant in the area is Same Same but Different Café, located near the village of Los Cerritos.

For lunch in Todos Santos itself, I highly recommend eating at Jazamango, a highly-acclaimed, farm-to-table restaurant with a seasonal menu that heavily features ingredients sourced directly from its on-site garden. The restaurant offers a chic yet cozy atmosphere with an open-air layout. Guests dine amidst the beautiful garden, which yields many of the fresh herbs and vegetables used in the dishes. The setting of Jazamango, which includes rustic picnic tables and views of the garden from every angle, is described as a peaceful retreat. Highly recommended dishes by guests and the head chef include wood-grilled chocolate clams (a traditional Baja dish cooked over mesquite), grilled octopus with risotto and sofrito, and lamb barbacoa.

Todos Santos Beaches

If you want to visit the beach in Todos Santos, you must be aware that the Pacific coast has strong currents and is largely unsafe for swimming.

For safe swimming, sunbathing, and beginner surf lessons, I strongly recommend Playa Los Cerritos, located just south of Todos Santos. It is one of the only reliably swimmable beaches in the area. For a unique wildlife experience, especially between December and February, look into a sunset visit to a local sanctuary like Tortugueros Las Playitas for a chance to release baby sea turtles into the ocean! After your visit, you can view the sunset at Cerritos Beach before heading back to Cabo, or grab a drink at a beachside spot like Barracuda Cantina.

Alternatively, you can visit Punta Lobos to watch the local fishermen return with their catch in the afternoon, or find a beautiful cove like Playa Las Palmas for a quiet stroll and a potential (though always cautious) dip in the water. Do not attempt to swim at beaches like La Cachora or La Pastora due to the dangerous surf.

Day 4: Exploring Cabo’s City Center

Today, immerse yourself in downtown Cabo San Lucas, starting with its unique shopping and culture. Begin by visiting the major retail hubs like Plaza Puerto Paraiso and Patio Los Cabos Mall along the waterfront. For a unique artisanal experience, head to The Glass Factory (near El Medano Beach) to see one-of-a-kind glass blown pieces such as glasses and bowls, and watch the skilled artisans in action (Note: purchases here are often cash only).

To connect with the city’s local history and cultural core, take time to explore the area near the main square, visiting the historic Church of Saint Luke (Iglesia de San Lucas) and the nearby Plaza Amelia Wilkes, a charming spot to people-watch. For a quick, informative stop, the Natural History Museum of Cabo San Lucas is right there, offering insights into the Baja region’s geology and marine life.

In the afternoon, head to the marina to fully embrace the waterfront. Take a leisurely stroll along the entire Marina Boardwalk to admire the luxury yachts, fishing boats, and the resident sea lions often found basking on the docks. Conclude your city center day by relaxing at Medano Beach, or enjoy an authentic meal by seeking out a traditional taquería just a few blocks from the main tourist strip for a taste of more local cuisine.

Cabo San Lucas seen from the marina

Dinner

As your day concludes at the marina and Medano Beach, I have listed two different dinner options compared to Day 2, where your day also ends at the marina. For an elegant and famously romantic experience specializing in Baja-style seafood and premium steaks, head to Edith’s, known for its rustic Californian decor, candlelit palapas, and signature tableside Caesar salad service. If you prefer a vibrant, authentic Mexican celebration set in a colorful, open courtyard with live mariachi music and delicious traditional fare like carnitas, visit Los Tres Gallos, located a few blocks from the marina near the downtown core.

Day 5: Land Activities

Hiking: The Hike with the Dogs

I recommend starting your day with the unique and highly-rated guided trek up Mount Solmar (Cerro del Vigía), located right next to Land’s End/The Arch. This trail offers truly spectacular sunrise/morning views of the Pacific meeting the Sea of Cortez and is led by a local guide named Enrique from his dog training and rescue camp. The highlight is hiking alongside a pack of his friendly rescue dogs, giving this trail the name “The Hike with the Dogs.”

Key Information

  • Schedule: Typically starts promptly at 8:00am (check the schedule for seasonal changes, especially in summer). It is offered daily, usually Sunday through Friday (closed on Saturdays).
  • Meeting Point: Enrique’s Dog Training Camp near the marina.
  • Duration & Difficulty: A relatively short hike (about 1.5–2 hours round trip), but it is steep and challenging, involving some minor rock scrambling. Sturdy footwear and plenty of water are a must.
  • Cost: Technically free, but tipping Enrique is strongly encouraged as it supports his dog rescue efforts.

Alternative Hiking Trails (Self-Guided)

While Mount Solmar is the famous dog hike, Cabo San Lucas offers two other popular self-guided trails for stunning views and a good workout:

Cerro de la Z (Cerro Prieto)

This is a fast, challenging ascent known for delivering one of the best 360-degree panoramic views of Cabo, overlooking the Pacific, the Sea of Cortez, and the entire city.

  • Trail: Quick, intense workout.
  • Access/Surface: Accessible via a closed service road through the upscale Pedregal neighborhood. Reviewers note the path is mostly paved (or cement/gravel) in disrepair, which makes it less technical than Mount Solmar but still very steep.
  • Distance/Time: Very short, about 0.5 to 0.7 miles (1–1.3 km) one way. Most hikers can reach the top in 20–30 minutes at a moderate pace.
  • Key Tip: You can often access it from the large streets like Calle San Miguel Herrera or Calle Lerry near Pedregal. Go early for sunrise or late for sunset; there is zero shade.

Cerro de Las Antenas (Sendero de las Víboras)

This trail offers a longer, more adventurous desert hiking or mountain biking experience, leading to the complex of radio towers on a peak outside the main city center.

  • Trail: Longer, more secluded desert exploration.
  • Access/Surface: This is a circuit/loop trail that is part dirt road and part mountain bike trail. It features some steep inclines and often involves navigating natural desert terrain.
  • Distance/Time: Approximately 4.3 miles (6.9 km) for the full circuit, which takes an average of 1.5 to 2.5 hours to complete.
  • Key Tip: Known locally as the “Path of the Snakes” (Sendero de las Víboras), so keeping an eye on the trail and wearing sturdy boots is highly advised. Like all Cabo hikes, there is minimal to no shade.

ATV/UTV/Ziplining Adventures

When seeking high-energy desert and canyon thrills like ATV/UTV tours and ziplining, Wild Canyon Adventures is the primary and most popular destination near Cabo San Lucas, offering a one-stop shop for multiple activities.

Wild Canyon Adventures

As the premier choice for adventure seekers, Wild Canyon Adventures is a one-stop destination for canyon thrills, offering a wide range of activities just outside of Cabo on the corridor to San José del Cabo. The park is best known for its guided ATV and UTV tours through desert and canyon trails, which typically start in the high-end price range of $100–$150 USD per person.

They also feature a world-class Zipline Canopy Tour, boasting some of the region’s longest and highest ziplines, with dedicated tours starting around $90–$130 USD. Beyond riding and zipping, the park offers unique thrills like bungee jumping and a suspension bridge walk. A major convenience is that the initial price usually includes round-trip transportation from most major Cabo hotels.

Alternative Options

For travelers looking for variety or different scenery:

A-Team Activities: Many smaller tour operators offer ATV tours focusing on the desert trails north of Cabo or closer to the mountains, sometimes at a lower price point than the large adventure parks.

Rancho Carisuva: Located along the Pacific side, this ranch focuses on desert and beach riding. They are well-known for their ATV and horseback riding tours that often include ocean views.

Important Tips for Adventure Tours

Safety & Gear Precautions
  • Sun Protection: The desert sun is intense. Wear sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat (for before/after the helmet).
  • Dust Protection: For ATV/UTV tours, expect heavy dust. Wear a bandana or dust mask over your mouth and nose (some tours provide these for a fee).
  • Dress Appropriately: You will get dirty. Wear closed-toe shoes (mandatory for ATVs/ziplining) and comfortable clothes you don’t mind staining.
  • Helmet/Goggles: Ensure your operator provides well-fitting, quality helmets and goggles. Never ride without them.
Booking & Hidden Costs
  • Photo Packages: Almost all operators charge a separate, high fee for photos. Be prepared to pay $40–$80+ USD for a single photo package, or plan to use your own secure camera (often requires a strap/harness).
  • Damage Waiver: Many tours require a refundable security deposit or charge a non-refundable damage waiver fee ($10–$25 USD) for the ATV/UTV, which is not included in the original price.
  • Lockers: Bring minimal valuables and carry a few small bills, as lockers often require a minimal fee.
  • Book Direct/Compare: While Wild Canyon Adventures is great, compare prices with alternative operators like Rancho Carisuva or local outfitters if you are looking for a more budget-friendly or specific experience.
ATVing through the desert

Dinner

After your day of land adventures, consider eating dinner near the corridor to San José del Cabo. For a unique, high-end experience, consider the acclaimed farm-to-table restaurants like Flora Farms and Acre Baja (near San José del Cabo), known for their stunning settings, organic ingredients, and high-quality cuisine. If you prefer a romantic night with unforgettable views, the area features dramatic cliffside dining at El Farallon (famous for its Pacific-facing setting) or the tiered, iconic sunset views at Sunset Mona Lisa

Closer to downtown Cabo San Lucas, you can enjoy the vibrant, authentic atmosphere of Traditional Mexican spots like Los Tres Gallos and Mi Casa, both celebrated for their classic dishes and beautiful courtyards. Finally, for a casual and affordable bite, grab a meal at a local favorite like Tacos Guss or the elevated taco experience at La Lupita Tacos & Mezcal.

Day 6: Relaxed Beach Morning and San José del Cabo Art District

On your last full day, start with a leisurely morning of pure relaxation on the beach. To maximize your experience, choose a beach different from Day 1 to get a final taste of the coast.

If you spent Day 1 at the lively Médano Beach, opt for a calmer, swimmable cove like Santa Maria Bay or Chileno Beach on the Tourist Corridor for excellent snorkeling and a more secluded feel. Alternatively, consider visiting Palmilla Beach near San José del Cabo for a gorgeous, family-friendly crescent of golden sand.

Cultural Afternoon in San José del Cabo

The latter half of the day is dedicated to the San José del Cabo Art District, which offers a completely different, quieter, and more authentic “Old Mexico” feel compared to the party atmosphere of Cabo San Lucas.

In the late afternoon (around 4:00pm), take a taxi or Uber to the historic center of San José del Cabo. The area is a charming maze of cobblestone streets behind the main church, where you can browse high-end fine art galleries, independent boutiques, and the historic town square (Plaza Mijares).

Highly Recommended: If your last full day is a Thursday (November through June), the Art Walk takes place from 5:00pm– 9:00pm. During this time, the streets are closed to traffic, and the galleries open their doors, often serving complimentary wine or tequila, creating a festive atmosphere perfect for an early dinner before returning to Cabo San Lucas.

Dinner

For a truly unforgettable farewell dinner before heading home, San José del Cabo offers two exceptional, high-end cliffside options. Sunset Monalisa, located along the Tourist Corridor, is arguably the most famous spot for its multi-tiered seating designed to capture the ultimate panoramic view of El Arco and the sunset, serving sophisticated Mediterranean-themed cuisine. Reservations are essential, especially if you want a front-row table for sunset.

For a more dramatic and exclusive experience closer to Cabo San Lucas, El Farallon at the Waldorf Astoria is a must. Carved into the cliffs with a rustic, intimate ambiance, it features a unique “Ocean to Table” concept where you select your fresh catch from a market display, often starting your evening with a drink in their champagne bar nestled inside a torch-lit rock cave. Getting here requires driving through the private tunnel into the Pedregal resort, and reservations are essential.

Since you will be coming from San José del Cabo, Sunset Monalisa offers a slightly more convenient location on your route back to Cabo San Lucas, but both guarantee a spectacular, romantic finale to your six-day visit to Cabo.

Alternative Attractions

Alternative Day Trip: La Paz and Snorkeling with Sea Lions

If you prefer a full day focused on marine adventure and a change of scenery from Cabo, consider the capital city of La Paz and the UNESCO World Heritage site, Isla Espíritu Santo. The primary draw is a tour to the Los Islotes sea lion colony, where you can snorkel or dive with friendly wild sea lions—a true bucket-list experience! The drive is longer (about 2 hours north from Cabo), making this a full-day commitment, but it provides a look at a more authentic, tranquil Mexican city with world-class marine life. You can book tours to Isla Espíritu Santo from La Paz on both Viator and GetYourGuide.

Culinary Immersion: Authentic Mexican Cooking Class

For food enthusiasts seeking a hands-on cultural experience, book a guided Authentic Mexican Cooking Class. This is an excellent alternative to a full-day excursion. You’ll typically visit local markets or gardens to source ingredients, learn to prepare classic dishes (like tamales or mole), and then enjoy the feast you created. Many classes also offer a guided Tequila, Mezcal, or Sotol tasting, providing a fun, educational, and delicious half-day activity. You can book cooking classes on both Viator and GetYourGuide.

Golfing

Cabo San Lucas is home to some of the finest golf courses in the world, renowned for their dramatic desert-meets-ocean landscapes and celebrity-designer pedigree. Three popular and highly rated golf clubs are:

  • Quivira Golf Club: Designed by Jack Nicklaus, this course is famous for having several cliffside holes and panoramic ocean views. Note that play is typically exclusive to guests of Pueblo Bonito resorts.
  • Rancho San Lucas Golf Club: An impressive Greg Norman design known for its challenging layout, blending desert, dunes, and oceanfront holes.
  • Cabo San Lucas Country Club: Offers a more accessible and affordable option with fantastic views of Land’s End and El Arco.

The Experience: Regardless of the course you choose, expect a premium experience that often includes all-inclusive food and beverage at gourmet comfort stations built right into the course (a hallmark of Los Cabos golf). Be sure to check booking requirements and tee times well in advance, especially during high season (November-April), and be sure to inquire about package deals if staying at a partner resort.

Pricing & Booking Notes

  • Price Categories
    • Luxury/Exclusive: Expect green fees to be in the $300–$450+ USD range, often including all taxes and amenities. Quivira is typically exclusive to guests of the Pueblo Bonito resorts.
    • Mid-Range/Public: Fees typically range from $150–$250 USD.

Where Should You Stay?

Luxury: Montage Los Cabos; Esperanza, Auberge Collection; Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal

The Waldorf Astoria is in Pedregal and closest to the city center along the coast, while the other two hotels are farther north along the coast. Guests of all three of these hotels praised the service, the amenities, and the gorgeous property.

Mid-Range: The Bungalows Hotel; Collection O Casa Bella Hotel Boutique, Cabo San Lucas

The Bungalows Hotel is a 12-minute walk from the city center, and guests loved the rooms, breakfast, and service. Collection O Casa Bella Hotel Boutique is located close to the marina, and guests loved the spacious, clean rooms and the service.

Budget: Villa Bellissima; Villa Sevina; Blarney Castle Inn

All three lodgings are villas. While the Blarney Castle Inn is located just north of Pedregal, the Villa Bellissima and Villa Sevina are both in Pedregal and are closest to the water. Guests at all three consistently praised the location, service, and food.
